Mississippi Choctaws mum on benefits of casino

Monday, April 23, 2007

The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians hasn't provided details on the benefits a proposed off-reservation casino would provide to the community, The Biloxi Sun Herald reports.

The tribe wants to build a casino in Ocean Springs, more than 200 miles from the reservation. The tribe plans to provide money for "schools, roads, public safety and other local needs," according to a statement provided to the paper.

The paper has asked for more details about the pledge, including how much money would be provided. But the tribe hasn't answered, the paper said.

The tribe operates casinos on its reservation and has contributed $1.35 million since 2001 to Neshoba County. Local officials say the casinos have been positive and that the tribe is a good neighbor.
