Residents oppose Chukchansi casino's water plan

The Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians says it welcomes the chance to discuss plans for a sewage treatment system at the Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino in California.

The tribe applied for a federal permit to send treated wastewater into Coarsegold Creek, which empties into the Fresno River. The Environmental Protection Agency opened a public comment period but residents say they didn't hear about the project until the deadline passed.

Farmers are concerned that the wastewater will affect their irrigation supply. Others are worried that Hensley Lake, where people swim and fish, will be harmed.

Even though the deadline passed, the tribe says it supports a request for a public hearing.
