Supervisors in Jackson County continue to debate whether they can call a vote on the off-reservation casino sought by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.
Choctaw Chief Phillip Martin asked the county to schedule a non-binding referendum in 2008. He says the tribe won't proceed with a casino unless voters support it. But county officials aren't sure whether they have the legal authority to call a referendum. One supervisor made a request to ask the state attorney general for an opinion on the matter but the request was rejected. The board of supervisors asked its attorney to research potential options.
