Massachusetts governor considers gaming

Monday, January 15, 2007

The new governor of Massachusetts said he will consider legalizing slot machines, a move that would open the door for Class III gaming for tribes.

Gov. Deval Patrick (D) said gaming could help the state close a $1 billion budget shortfall and help local governments. He plans to make a decision on the matter within the next three months.

If slot machines are legalized, the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts could open a casino. The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, whose federal recognition will be finalized in March, could also seek gaming.
