Turtle Mountain chairman says tribe deserves casino

The chairman of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa said the tribe deserves a casino in Grand Forks because a Chippewa leader was forced to give up land in the region.

Ken Davis said the tribe has a legitimate right to Grand Forks. He said Chief Red Bear of the Pembina Band of Chippewa, facing military pressure, had to give up the land in 1863.

The tribe wants the city's support for the non-reservation casino. Other tribes in the state oppose the idea. The Turtle Mountain Band currently operates a casino on its reservation.
