THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2001 The Michigan State House on Wednesday narrowly defeated a bill that would have encouraged Gov. John Engler to negotiate a gaming compact with the Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Band of Pottawatomi. The bill's sponsor, Rep. Larry DeVuyst, said he hopes the state will negotiate a compact because he believes the tribe's casino will be approved in federal court.
