Editorial: Navajo consumer law backfired

THURSDAY, APRIL 4, 2002

In an editorial today, The Farmington Daily-Times says the Navajo Nation's consumer protection law has "backfired" because tribal members are being singled out based on race.

The paper cites instances where Navajo consumers are being asked to fill out extra paperwork or subjected to additional scrutiny when trying to purchase goods on and off the reservation. "Some recently interviewed objected to being singled out and referred to it as racism," the paper wrote.

"That is exactly what it is, but it is racism brought about by the Navajo government, not the small-mindedness of business owners or car dealers," the paper continues.
