In an editorial today, The Norwich Bulletin criticizes the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation for not supporting a plan to increase casino aid to five southeastern Connecticut communities.

Gov. John Rowland (R) has called for the municipalities of Preston, Norwich, Ledyard, North Stonington and Montville to receive an extra $500,000 from the state's casino fund. The paper says the communities could use the money, citing budget woes.

But Pequot chairman Kenneth Reels said last week he would not support the proposal. He cites a study which showed the towns have benefited positively from the presence of two tribal casinos.

The paper agrees that the casinos have helped the region. But the paper says it is "very disappointing" that the Pequot Tribe won't support "simple fairness" to the five towns.
