FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2002

In an editorial published in today's edition of The Minneapolis Star Tribune, nine tribal leaders say they oppose a plan to create an urban casino and share the proceeds with two impoverished tribes.

The tribal leaders, all members of the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association, say the casino is "a thinly veiled attempt" to allow expansion of non-Indian gaming. They say it won't help any tribe, even the White Earth and Red Lake Ojibwe bands who are supporting the urban facility.
