"Here in Connecticut, we were aghast to learn that the Mashantucket Pequots became a federally recognized tribe through an Act of Congress instead of having to pass muster at the Bureau of Indian Affairs. We've been told that was unusual. I now find that it is the fast-track way to federal recognition for many groups from Connecticut to Hawaii and many states in between. When Hawaii became a state, there was no “Native Hawaiian” government. . ."
