Bruce Williams: "[A]s critical as the [Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments'] work is and has been on emergency preparedness, it also must show leadership on tough, controversial issues. When Carol Schwartz decided to bring what can only be termed a moral issue before the board -- the issue of the Redskins' team name -- it was appropriate for the board, which is made up of elected officials, to take a stand."

Jerry L. Clark: "Before sport teams named for Native Americans are made to change their names, far more offensive names of many American Indian tribes must be expunged first. European explorers encountered indigenous peoples, who were identified by neighboring tribes with uncomplimentary nomenclature."
