"After the big snowstorm in October, when most of us thought we were in for a long, cold and snowy winter, a Native friend of mine disagreed. His explanation came from the fact that the red willow he uses for tobacco had green to it, which meant to him it would be a warm winter.

I thought, but didn't say out loud, "have you had a good look outside?" We had some 12 inches of snow at that time, and we thought it probably would stay on the ground for the rest of the winter.

It seems, however, that my friend may be right. . ."
