The Washington Post today issued a clarification on a commentary which said tribes received "reparations" for lost land.

In an April 7 article a guest writer wrote that the United States has paid "Native Americans whose lands were stolen outright." Ted Gulp, a professor at Case Western Reserve University, wrote "Paying Out Isn't the Same As Owning Up."

The Post said Gulp's comments mischaracterized treaties signed with Indian nations. "Benefits provided to tribes as part of early peace treaties were not characterized as reparations for harm done," the paper said.
