Postal hike layoffs coming in June

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9, 2002 The Postal Service on Tuesday announced it would raise the price of a first class stamp to 37 cents and lay off as many as 15,000 workers. The Postal Service said the increase and cuts were necessary due to the shrinking economy and terrorist-related woes, which have decreased mail volume and income. The raise was reached after negotiations with major mail customers. The rate hike would go into effect June 30 and has to be approved by the postal commission. Get the Story:
