Interior says payments to be made sometime

TUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 2002

A spokesperson for the Department of Interior told The Washington Post that payments to individual Indians will be made as soon as the special master in the class action lawsuit agrees to allow computer systems to be reconnected.

A federal judge has directed the department to work with special master Alan Balaran on its computer security woes. So far, the Interior has been able to reconnect some systems, such as the one that processes general assistance payments, but hasn't moved on disbursing money to Indian landowners.

December 2001 payments were already missed with January 2002 funds in limbo.
