Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) has $1 million in funds for his re-election race, leading the pack for Connecticut's 2nd Congressional District, reports The Norwich Bulletin.

The total doesn't include money taken in at a recent fundraiser featuring President Bush. Simmons, who mediated now-collapsed talks between the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and three towns, is running uncontested for his party primary.

Three Democrats are in the running for their party nomination. According to the paper, Joe Courtney leads with about $250,758, federal recognition and casino critic Jeff Benedict has $47,091 while Steve Spellman hadn't filed a report as of press time yesterday.

Maybe that's because he was busy writing. In an opinion piece published in The New London Day, he criticizes a local leader for endorsing Benedict "by trashing every Democrat in sight."
