Pequot critic files challenge

FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 2002

Connecticut Congressional hopeful Jeff Benedict on Thursday filed a primary challenge in the town of Norwich.

The challenge would decide which delegates get sent to the Democratic primary this summer. There are 17 currently, only three of whom back Benedict, The Norwich Bulletin reports.

But according to Benedict, who wrote a book saying the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation was not a real tribe, he doesn't need the delegates. Neither does front runner Joe Courtney, whom the paper reports has enough support without Norwich's slate.
