Ridge to meet with Congress

THURSDAY, APRIL 4, 2002

Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge on Wednesday said he will meet with two Congressional committees but reiterated the Bush administration's position that he won't formally testify.

He will meet with the House Government Reform Committee, which will hold a closed session on April 11. Another will be before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which has not set a date for what Ridge calls "briefings."

Democrats and some Republicans have been upset Ridge won't provide formal testimony. The White House believes briefings, either in public or private sessions, will accomplish the same.
