The head of the Army Corps of Engineers was forced to resign from his post on Wednesday for questioning budget cuts proposed by President Bush.

Mike Parker had been a staunch defender of funding for the agency. He opposed fundamental changes in the way the Corps operates and instead told Congress that he needed help fending off funding slashes.

Parker was offered a choice to resign or be fired, reports The New York Times.
