Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Wednesday abruptly canceled a hearing for a bill he has introduced to distribute a $129 million land claim award to members of various Shoshone tribes.

Reid said he discovered the bill didn't have the support he originally was led to believe. A hearing was set today for the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, on which Reid sits.

A number of Shoshone leaders and activists oppose the payment because it effectively relinquishes their claims under an 1863 treaty.
