"The reported remarks do not express my views and do not accurately reflect what I believe I said some 12-13 weeks ago."

Attorney General John Ashcroft issued this one-sentence statement on Wednesday in response to outrage from Arab-American and Muslim groups to a report in which he allegedly stated: "Islam is a religion in which God requires you to send your son to die for him. Christianity is a faith in which God sends his son to die for you."

But the groups point out Ashcroft has not denied what was reported by a conservative columnist last November. They say he has to correct what he said, but Department of Justice officials say he only meant his words to apply to the suicide hijackers of September 11.
