The U.S. Marines has confirmed David Tsosie is a Code Talker and the Navajo man will be awarded a Congressional silver medal.

Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) gave Tsosie the news Friday and apologized on behalf of the United States for the mixup. Tsosie was expecting the award last November but was denied after no paperwork could be found to confirm he was one of the 300 Navajo soldiers who participated as a Code Talker during World War II.

The Marine Corps finally verified Tsosie was one of the men who followed the original 29 Code Talkers. The first group, of which only five are still alive, received, Congressional gold medals.
