Additional Indian trust consultation set

THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 2002

The Department of Interior has finalized the date and location of an additional meeting on the reorganization of Indian trust duties.

Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb had announced earlier this month that he and other officials would hold a session in Portland, Oregon, on February 14. It will be held at the Sheraton Hotel, 8235 NE Airport Way.

A Federal Register notice published today formally announces the meeting.

The notice says written comments will be accepted at the meeting. It also says the department will continue accepting additional responses but does not formally extend the cut-off period.

Previous notices have the comment period closing on February 15 but McCaleb has said the deadline would surely be extended.

McCaleb's office is still finalizing meetings to be held in Billings, Montana, and Window Rock, Arizona, on the Navajo Reservation. Navajo Nation officials have asked the session be held February 28 or March 1.

Tribal leaders and technical advisors are meeting today in Washington, D.C., in preparation for Friday's consultation, which is being held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, 2799 Jefferson Davis Highway, in Arlington, Virginia.
