Sioux tribe honored for payments

FRIDAY, JANUARY 11, 2002

January 10 was declared Lower Brule Sioux Tribe Day, in honor of the South Dakota tribe's help in distributing general assistance checks to Indian Country.

In response to a court-ordered Internet shutdown, the tribe stepped forward last month and offered its services to a crippled Bureau of Indian Affairs. In the form of 4,600 checks, the tribe made $15 million in payments in time for Christmas, a task the BIA couldn't do on its own at the time.

The checks were sent to tribes in the Aberdeen region. They covered basic needs like elder care, child care and burials.

The computer system that processes the general assistance checks has since been restarted. A lockdown on checks to individual Indians, however, has not been resolved.
