WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 2002

A bill under consideration by the Senate creates an office to help Native-owned small businesses.

A joint hearing was held by the Senate Indian Affairs and Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committees yesterday to receive testimony on the Small Business Administration. All witnesses spoke in favor of expanding services to Indian Country although an SBA official said the bill duplicates existing efforts.

The bill is being co-sponsored by Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-Minn.), who sits on both committees.
