Mass. warms to tribal casino

TUESDAY, APRIL 23, 2002 Things are looking up for the Gay Head Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts. After being rebuffed by influential lawmakers, support is growing for the tribe's proposal for a casino, The Boston Herald reports. The paper cites sources which say House Speaker Thomas M. Finneran has "softened" his objections and is effectively recommending a casino as a way to boost sagging state revenue. The paper also quotes Kevin Sullivan, acting Gov. Jane Swift's administration and finance secretary, as saying the "door should be opened" to considering gaming. Get the Story:
