Catskills casinos eagerly awaited

There is opposition to Indian gaming in New York state, playing itself out in the courts and the statehouse.

There is support too, with much of it among residents of the Catskills, where three casinos have been approved. Once a bustling resort, people are welcoming the chance at economic revival.

Along with casinos comes jobs and money, they say. Opponents, however, predict crime, traffic and social problems.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is evaluating a land-into-trust proposal for one casino for the St. Regis / Akwesasne Mohawk Nation. Another application has been filed by the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohicans of Wisconsin.

The third is up in the air, with tribes in and out of the state vying for a chance.
