Landless tribe seeks property

MONDAY, JANUARY 21, 2002

The federal status of the Little Shell Chippewa Tribe of Montana is not yet finalized but the landless tribe is already cultivating economic development prospects.

Along with two other partners, the tribe wants to complete a nine-hole golf course that has not been finished. The group wants to add other developments to the site, including an RV park.

Former Assistant Secretary Kevin Gover in May 2000 extended preliminary recognition to the tribe. The tribe has asked for an extension on the comment period, the last of which closed earlier this month.
