Pueblo nearing land claim settlement

WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 2002 San Ildefonso Pueblo is moving to settle an outstanding land claim. Gov. John Gonzales told The Albuquerque Journal the tribe will give up claims to 90,000 acres of land in exchange for $6.9 million. The money will be used to purchase 7,700 acres of federal forest land over which the Pueblo would retain title. The tribe's claim was brought before the Indian Claims Commission in 1951 and moved to federal court when the panel was disbanded. But the Pueblo never wanted money.
