FRIDAY, JANUARY 18, 2002

Gov. Howard Dean (D) of Vermont on Thursday told lawmakers to consider not supporting the federal recognition of the St. Francis Band of the Abenaki Nation.

Dean said recognition could lead to land claims that would put a cloud over property. He also said it could lead to casinos in the state.

The tribe filed for recognition in 1983. It has been on the "ready" list since 1996, meaning its application is complete but Bureau of Indian Affairs staff have not gotten around to it.

The tribe is the first on the ready list.
