U.S. pulls out of war court treaty

TUESDAY, MAY 7, 2002

The Bush administration on Monday announced it was withdrawing formally from a treaty to establish an international war crimes tribunal.

The White House said it would not support or provide help to the International Criminal Court and would not seek ratification of a treaty former President Bill Clinton signed. One of the reasons cited was that it could allow for too much authority over the United States.

The court, which has broad jurisdiction, will hear genocide, war crimes and other related cases. It was created last month.
