First Nations leaders are opposing a referendum that tests voter support for sovereignty and the treaty process. Band leaders say they will protest, start boycotts and start advertising against the eight question referendum, scheduled to mailed later this year.

A Native elder in the custody of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was killed after a forceful blow to his chest led to pneumonia, a coroner's inquest has determined. Paul Alphonse, 67, is being considered a victim of homicide but the jury finding doesn't lay fault with anyone.
