Yucca doubts won't be addressed soon

The Energy Department won't address nearly 300 questions raised by Congressional investigators because they relate to the licensing of a national nuclear waste repository and not the site's suitability, an official said.

Only if Secretary Spencer Abraham recommends Yucca Mountain in Nevada be the dump will licensing issues come into play, said Lake Barrett, acting director of the Energy Department's Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management. Abraham is expected to make a decision within weeks.

Area tribes and officials, politicians and residents of Nevada oppose the designation of the site to hold up to 77,000 tons of highly radioactive nuclear waste.
