Peabody Energy, the largest coal company in the world, is blaming drought and increased population for springs that are drying up near the Hopi and Navajo reservations in northeastern Arizona.

Hopi activists, however, blame Peabody for the lack of water. Peabody uses about 1.3 billion gallons of water for its coal slurry operation.

The company has asked the Department of Interior for approval of a new mine that would increase its water usage by another 380 million gallons.
