The Navajo Nation is missing out on millions of dollars because the tribe hasn't asserted its water rights, according to a tribal hydrologist.

A large water rights settlement being finalized in Arizona doesn't include the tribe. The issue was one of several discussed at at meeting held by the Dine Bidziil Coalition on Saturday.

Other issues included the takeover of Indian Health Service contracting by the tribe, which the coalition opposes. The tribal council voted it down but the issue has been resurrected and will be reconsidered at a special session this week.

In related Navajo news, Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb said he supported restoring full funding to the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project sometime in the future. The fiscal year 2003 budget cuts funds to the from $25.3 million to $13.1 million.
