The Oklahoma House on Wednesday approved a measure that requires state voters to approve the sale of water to another state.

The bill, in the form of a constitutional amendment, was drafted in response to a proposed compact that would settle the water rights of the Chickasaw Nation and the Choctaw Nation. The deal would have sold water to the state of Texas.

But talks fell apart after Texas reportedly balked at the asking price for the water.
