The Klamath Tribes of Oregon on Tuesday welcomed Secretary of Interior Gale Norton's announcement of meetings to discuss their views on the Klamath Basin.

Department of Interior officials will meet with the tribes to discuss two issues. One is the management of natural resources in the troubled region and the other is a possible restoration of 690,000 acres of land stripped from the tribes when they were terminated.

"Secretary Norton is asking the right questions and taking the right steps," said Klamath Chairman Allen Foreman. in a statement.

The move comes nearly a year after the conflict between non-Indian farmers and the Interior. The department denied the farmers water last year in order to protect fish and uphold trust responsibilities to the tribes.

Norton did not set out a timetable for the discussions.
