Report questions ANWR claim

America's dependence on foreign oil will drop by 2 percent if the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is opened to oil drilling, a federal report states.

America currently imports 62 percent of its oil. The Energy Department states this will drop to 60 percent if development is authorized by Congress.

The report has environmentalists claiming an ironic victory. Not only does it strike down a major claim of pro-drilling advocates, they say, it was requested by Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska), who frequently cites energy independence as a reason for opening up ANWR.
