WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13, 2002 Research published in today's issue of Environmental Science and Technology has found that 80 percent of streams analyzed by the federal government are contaminated with antibiotics, steroids, synthetic hormones and other pharmaceutical waste. The U.S. Geological Survey, an agency of the Department of Interior, studied 139 streams in 30 states to look for 95 particular drugs. Trace amounts were found, indicating illegal dumping but also long-term use of the chemicals. Get the Story:
