Test better at finding brucellosis

FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2002

Federal and Montana state officials are using a new test to detect brucellosis in bison that live in, and often wander out of, Yellowstone National Park.

The park and the state began using the test this winter, when more bison were killed in order to protect cattle from brucellosis. Brucellosis can cause cattle to abort and ranchers fear bison will spread the disease although no transmission in the wild has ever occurred.

For that reason, conservationists say the test, which involves a computer to test blood samples, will only accelerate the killings, a charge the officials deny.
