Tribes rally for salmon

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2002

Six tribes from the Pacific Northwest and Canada met on the Lummi Reservation in Washington on Tuesday to discuss the future of one of their most important resources.

"Gathering for Salmon" featured a traditional salmon feast but the words of tribal leaders on the poor runs and declining economic opportunities were the food for the day. The leaders also spoke of saving tribal culture.

The Lummi Nation declared its fisheries a disaster last year and is seeking help from the federal government.
