AFN supporting subsistence plan

Many Alaska Natives support federal management of subsistence resources but the Alaska Federation of natives is putting its weight behind Gov. Tony Knowles' proposal to have the state assume control again.

Knowles has proposed an amendment to the state's constitution that will recognize a rural and Native priority to subsistence. Currently, the constitution prohibits any preference, putting it in conflict with federal law which upholds a trust responsibility to Alaska Natives.

AFN said it would support the amendment but President Julie Kitka said there are some problems with the proposal.
