The state of Oklahoma and two tribes announced on Friday that negotiations over the sale of water to Texas have been terminated.

According to the Oklahomans, negotiators for Texas were offering $174 million to pay for $339 million worth of water. Texas, however, says it was willing to pay well over $200 million.

The sale was part of a compact being negotiated by the Chickasaw Nation and the Choctaw Nation. The deal would settle the tribes' water rights and split the profits from a water sale.

Some environmentalists, lawmakers, tribal members and tribes had raised questions about the deal. The Caddo Tribe said it had ancestral rights to the water and land in question that were being ignored.
