Tribal water deal seeing obstacles

FRIDAY, JANUARY 11, 2002 A deal to settle the water rights of two Oklahoma tribe and sell the water to Texas is running into obstacles from the state and, reportedly, the prospective buyer. Gov. Frank Keating (R) has been moving on a compact with the Chickasaw Nation and the Choctaw Nation. The tribes have treaty-protected water rights. But some lawmakers, politicians, environmentalists, tribal members and the public are questioning the deal. The Daily Oklahoman also reports that Texas has balked at some of the conditions of the sale. A press conference to update the status of the compact is scheduled today. Get the Story:
