FRIDAY, MAY 3, 2002

The student government committee of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign voted 14-5 to retire the school's controversial Chief Illiniwek mascot.

There were two abstentions at Wednesday night's vote. The committee in a statement said the mascot was "divisive."

The school trustees are considering what to do about the mascot. A report commissioned for the board suggested keeping the mascot but re-educating the community about it.
