TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 2002

Claimed by many, a headdress reported to have been worn by Apache leader Geronimo has been the subject of a long debate over ownership.

Valued at $1 million, the headdress was seized by the FBI after it was offered for sale on the Internet. Selling it would have been a violation of federal law.

Now in the hands of the Department of Interior, officials will decide to whom to repatriate it. The no longer federally recognized Chiracahua Apache Tribe of New Mexico, the Comanche Tribe of Oklahoma and several museums all want the item.
