How many people visit the Santa Fe Indian Market every year? According to the first study of its kind, not as many as expected.

Commissioned by the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, which puts on the market every August, the study showed that the total number of visitors to the two-day event was 43,749. The number counters an estimate of 100,000 that is often cited.

But that number may not have been totally off the wall. According to the study, the average visitor went to market an average of 1.77 times.

The study also looked at the impact of market on the local economy. The figure was put at $19.2 million.
