Cheap phone program could start soon

SEPTEMBER 6, 2000 Oklahoma Indians could benefit from the Federal Communication Commission's cheap phones program as early as October 1, says Southwestern Bell. To qualify, residents must live on tribal land. This includes almost all of eastern Oklahoma and 53 of the state's 77 counties. Residents must also meet an income test by qualifying for either the general assistance program of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the Head Start program, or the National School Lunch Program. The names of the FCC programs are Lifeline and Link Up. Local phone service should end up costing qualified Indian customers under $10 a month. Get the Story:
