APRIL 18, 2000 Speaking yesterday at Shiprock, New Mexico, President Clinton promised to improve life for Native Americans through better jobs, better investments, and better opportunities. Clinton acknolwedged that the federal government has not lived up to its promises to Native American people and tribes. At Shiprock, he announced over $100 million donated by technology companies to communities nationwide most affected by the digital divide. He also announced an FCC program to bring phone service to 300,000 reservation homes for $1 a month, through a 0.4% increase in long distance telephone charges. Other private-public partnerships unveiled included an Americorps program for the Navajo Nation, a Technology Grant by Microsoft to eight tribal colleges, and a conversion of youth centers, and other community facilities into computer centers through a joint effort of the PowerUp Foundation. Clinton's Digital Divide tour took him to Palo Alto, California, to the Navajo Nation, and Chicago, Illinois. Get the Story:
