DECEMBER 14, 2000

An international consortium of scientists have deciphered the genetic code of a plant called Arabidopsis thaliana, believing it to be the model that represents all plants.

The plant has about 26,000 genes and scientists say about half of them are copies of a core set of 15,000. The National Science Foundation is launching a project to understand what every single one does.
